Radically Reframing Climate Change: A Guide to Saving Ourselves by Will Hackman
The UU Ministry for Earth Community Read 2026-27 kicks off on Monday, September 28 at 7:45-9:00pm ET/4:45-6:00pm PT.
The first 15 minutes of every gathering will be Community Time where we will gather to sing songs of climate resilience/resistance before transition to our Community Read discussion.
ABOUT THE BOOK
In Radically Reframing Climate Change: A Guide to Saving Ourselves, Will Hackman argues that the problem isn’t scientific or fact-based, but rather political, emotional, and ideological. He identifies three leading barriers to solving climate change: polarization, paralysis, and inadequate messaging. Framing the climate crisis as a humanity crisis, Hackman encourages readers to convert their anxiety and anger into action.

Will Hackman is a Millennial, and he is pissed. Two wars, two global economic catastrophes, and a pandemic combined with a ballooning cost-of-living crisis and crushing student loan debt can do that to a person. But there’s one thing that compounds these challenges that is unequaled in human history: the ticking time bomb of fossil fuel emissions. Millennials and Gen-Zers will be left to deal with the worst of the climate change fallout well after those responsible have passed away. And we have never been more divided.

Rev. Lauren Spivey Levwood is a UU minister, movement artist, mother, and Executive Director of UU Ministry for Earth. Rev. Lauren’s professional background also includes massage therapy, Zen Shiatsu, Reiki, birth and postpartum doula care, Birthing From Within childbirth mentorship, and trauma-informed somatics.
Cheyenne Herlandstein
Cheyenne is a member of the Unitarian Universalist Community Church of Washington County, Oregon, and serves on the Board of Trustees there. She is a secondary science educator, a lifelong naturalist, gardener, sustainability enthusiast (a.k.a. eco-geek), and singer-songwriter.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Will Hackman has more than fifteen years’ experience working in US political campaigns, public policy process, strategic communications, coalition building, climate activism, and global environmental conservation advocacy. Will is a frequent climate voice online and in the media and has been interviewed on several climate change-related podcasts. His 2022 TEDx “The Future of Climate Change is Personal,” challenges us to reframe our climate conversations to overcome polarization and partisanship. His writing has appeared in The Hill, Washington Post, Anchorage Daily News, Georgetown Journal of International Affairs, Georgetown Public Policy Review, and other outlets.
