A message from the co-facilitators of February 24th UUMFE Community Read:

We’re looking forward to this month’s UUMFE Community Read of What If We Get It Right? by Ayana Elizabeth Johnson, “Culture is the Context,” pages 198-257.  Below, please find your facilitators’ guiding questions and some suggested actions in advance of February 24.

Questions to ponder

  • What media (movies, books, music, art) has changed how you understand or engage with Climate Justice or our natural world?
  • What media in this genre do you wish you were observing (seeing, watching, reading, listening to)?
  • What news media sources do you trust or distrust in relation to Climate reporting?
  • When have members of a different generation changed how you understand or engage with Climate Justice? Who has inspired you most?

Read the book section titled “Culture is the Context,” pages 198-257:

  • “I Dream of Climate Rom-coms”, Interview with Franklin Leonard and Adam McKay
  • “The Planet Is the Headline”, Interview with Kendra Pierre-Louis
  • “Dear Future Ones”, Poem by Jacqueline Woodson
  • “Kids These Days”, Interview with Xiye Bastida and Ayisha Siddiqa
  • “There Is Nothing Naive About Moral Clarity”

Actions to consider:

  • Watch the movie “Don’t Look Up,” which is referred to in the “I Dream of Climate Rom-Coms” chapter. In the spirit of the “Kids These Days” chapter, consider watching this movie with someone from another generation.
  • Schedule a nature break before or after our Community Read. Observe how spending time in nature impacts your mood and experience.
  • Register for our Climate Grief Support Group to process your learnings from our Community Read and your personal experiences with climate change. The group begins on Feb. 27 and will meed Fridays from 1-2pm ET/10-11am PT over Zoom. Click here to register and learn more.
