An affinity group of UU/adjacent Young Adults (ages ~18-35) is being organized by UU Young Adults for Climate Justice, UU Ministry for Earth, UU College of Social Justice, and many partners, to take action on the frontlines in northern Minnesota over the week of July 26 – August 1.
Fill out the form below by Sunday, July 11 to indicate your interest in the Affinity Group, and to ask for financial support. PLEASE READ this entire page before applying!
ABOUT: An “affinity group” in this context means a small group of people that comes together to prepare for and take direct action together. We are looking for folks who can commit to bringing different skills and gifts in supporting each other in a cohesive group to take strategic, escalated action and support those doing so. We are looking for folks with experience in jail support, escalated direct action, street medics, movement chaplaincy, protest art, live tweeting, photography, storytelling, facilitation, organizing, and more.
There will be a variety of roles to fulfill with varying risk-levels, but there is always a risk of arrest when being on the frontlines. We are prioritizing funding and accompaniment for those who are willing to be arrested, for Black, Indigenous, and other People of Color; for YAs based in the Great Lakes region, and folks with a long term commitment to the water protector movement.
ACCESSIBILITY & SAFETY: Financial support can go to transportation, camping gear, and food.
Details are still being worked out with frontline leaders, but we expect camps will have some infrastructure, like kitchen stoves, and some running water. Temperatures in late July will likely be in mid-70s to mid-80 degrees, and humid (more details will be available closer to the date.) Most of the affinity group will be camping in tents in rugged conditions, and other accommodations are available for those who need.
LOGISTICS: Frontline camps are a 3-4 hour drive north of Minneapolis. Please plan to arrive to Minneapolis by the afternoon of Monday, July 26 — and leave from Minneapolis in the afternoon/evening of Sunday, August 1 (or you can of course plan to stay longer at the frontlines, though funding is not guaranteed after August 1). There will be a van/transport available from Minneapolis to the camps the afternoon/evening on July 26, and the morning/afternoon of August 1.
