More than 200 human rights, environmental, public health, faith-based, civil rights, and workers’ rights groups signed on to a letter urgently requesting that the office of Florida Governor Ron DeSantis immediately take all necessary steps, together with local and federal authorities, to protect farmworkers in Immokalee during the COVID-19 pandemic.
- Set up a field hospital in Immokalee in order to provide quarantine space and treatment for farmworkers with positive cases of COVID-19.
- Provide personal protective gear and hand sanitizer to farmworkers, given that they are an “essential workforce”.
- Provide free, accessible tests in Immokalee.
- Allocate public funds for economic relief for Florida farmworkers.
UU Ministry for Earth signed onto this letter, as did the Unitarian Universalist Association, Interfaith Worker Justice, Unitarian Universalist Church of St Petersburg, Americans for Immigrant Justice, and many others.
