The Unitarian Universalist Church of Lincoln Green Sanctuary committee members are not short on accomplishments. They’ve been advising on the Mayor’s Environmental Task Force on Land Use, Water, Waste and Transportation since long before Lincoln committed to achieve a 26% greenhouse gas reduction below 2005 levels by 2025. That is the baseline commitment made by Mayors and Governors across the United States in the Climate Mayors Coalition and We Are Still In pledge.
The UUMFE campaign to Strengthen Local Climate Commitments supports UUs around the country to follow Unitarian Universalist Church of Lincoln’s example in engaging with local officials to improve and accelerate local climate action.
Unitarian Universalist Church of Lincoln has also installed ninety-six solar panels, and this is just part of how the congregation is reducing their carbon footprint. Individually, their members engage with the coalition against the Keystone XL pipeline, they educate with the League of Conservation Voters, join forces with Interfaith Power and Light, and advance the goals of Citizen’s Climate Lobby. That’s only their short list.
Like the timeless cranes of Nebraska’s Platte, their endurance for the long journey is essential and inspiring. Lincoln sets an example of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 13: Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts.
