Every year UU Ministry for Earth celebrates Earth Day with a different theme and makes materials on that topic available to individuals, families, and congregations. This year’s theme will be Justice for #EachGeneration, in partnership with the United Church of Christ and the other co-sponsors of the campaign.
Justice for #EachGeneration is a call for more than a thousand sermons in solidarity with the youth of Juliana vs. USA, a landmark court case case in which twenty-one courageous youth ages 10 to 21 have filed a lawsuit against the United States government for its role in causing climate change and violating their rights to life, liberty, and property, while also failing to protect essential public resources. UUMFE is calling on UU congregations to hold at least ONE HUNDRED Justice for #EachGeneration services for Earth Day.
UU Ministry for Earth is encouraging UUs to involve many generations in the worship plans for Earth Day Sunday this year—and is particularly encouraging congregations to invite young adults to speak or help organize the worship, so that your service will count towards both the Justice for #EachGeneration and the UU Young Adults for Climate Justice’s 100 Worship Services for Climate Justice initiative.
Get Involved
- Check out the Earth Day and Climate Justice Month resource packet (PDF) from UU Ministry for Earth!
- Tell your congregation’s worship team about the Justice for #EachGeneration theme for Earth Day 2018—see if they are interested in partnering with the congregation’s Green Sanctuary Committee or Climate Action Team (if there is one), and/or involving youth and young adult leaders in planning a multi-generational worship service about climate justice for Earth Day Sunday.
- Let UU Ministry for Earth know about your Earth Day event(s). You will be added to a map on our Earth Day resource page. All submissions will be entered into a raffle for a UUA Bookstore gift certificate.
- Stay tuned for more supporting resources from UUMFE! In early March, UUMFE will publish a special guest sermon from Rev. Susan Ritchie, PhD (Minister at North UU Congregation, Lewis Center, Ohio, and Director of the UU House of Studies at the Methodist Theological School in Ohio). If you register your congregation’s Earth Day events, you’ll receive email notifications when new resources are published.
